Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
