Meteorological Balloons Used to Smuggle Cigarettes Forced Closure of Airport in Lithuania
Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
